The situation this family finds itself in, is one any average family in any state could be caught up in. We are middle to low income people living our lives. We are being eaten up by a "system" that has already spent millions of dollars to get our loved ones, whom we believe are innocent, convicted of a horrific crime.
My husband's life is in jeopardy both by the so-called legal system and by angry Texans who have been convinced by a media blitz that Michael is already guilty -- a conviction not shared by those who know him.
There are facts about this case that the media hasn't covered. This is not the first time innocent people have been taken into custody for giving "confessions" to Austin police. There have been others who have had their lives ruined because of the rush to solve these murders. Do not be lulled into the belief that questionable tactics used in the past cannot be utilized in the present. The recanting of Rose's statement demonstrates that Austin police are still pushing psychological buttons and badgering individuals to gain the information they want.
During the course of this case much money has been moved around. Millions of dollars were set aside and the interest from that money went somewhere. Where? The yogurt shop where this terrible crime took place had no more than a hundred or so dollars in the register. Why would young boys put themselves in lifelong peril for $100? The very brutal natures of these young girls' deaths were time consuming, taking over an hour to commit. Could young boys do this crime and go on for eight years with normal lives--never telling anyone about their involvement? Why was the Austin police crime reconstruction expert, Dusty Hesskew, never permitted access to the building where this atrocity took place?
Our entire family is sympathetic to the families who went through this unbelievably terrible loss. We have families and can only imagine what their pain could have been and still is. The girls had promise and life that was snuffed out. But also know that not having a trial in a court truly interested in removing the blindfold from justice will only compound the tragedy. Michael, already incarcerated in Texas, has been forced to move from cell to cell because of threats on his life by other inmates. How do we fight and protect the one we love from such vigilante idealism? The courts rush ahead, leaving new victims floundering for a lifeboat in their awesome wake. How do we, who have nothing, obtain the wherewithal to get protection and legal help equal to what Texas is apparently willing to spend for persecution?
How are we supposed to fight this gigantic organization that wants Michael with or without due process? We have been told by attorneys in Texas, who wish to remain anonymous, that their justice system is riddled with corruption., that it is not uncommon for money to change hands to obtain a desired result. There has been surprise at the lawyers appointed because there exists other choices with more experience and expertise.
We can only make an urgent plea to other average Americans to consider that at some point in time, they too could be faced with this nightmare. Michael was taken from our lives suddenly, coerced, berated, frightened, intimidated and emotionally beaten up; all this by the system that we always believed was in place to protect us from the very thing that is happening; all this by a system that has the machine working for them. What do we do? Where do we go? Have we irreversibly reached the age where innocence is truly only for those who can buy it?
Our lives have been permanently and horribly altered by the events that are unfolding, regardless of the outcome. Now we too are frightened, berated, emotionally beaten by a media hungry for sensationalism at any price. We ask only that America take a long hard look at Texas style justice and consider what is happening. We will not survive without a support system from somewhere. Please help us.
